If you are to place two phones in front of you, one from 2020 and the other dated a decade ago, you will see a major difference. Each development has been designed to make communication and connectivity more convenient and faster. Way back it was common to find an infrared phone, but today they are mostly a lost treasure. Blackberrys were huge back then, nowadays you’ll hardly see one. Today’s phones, however, have Bluetooth 5, NFC, WIFI 6, and even 5G. In this piece, we shall take a deep dive at each year and the advancements it brought about in the phone world.
As we were coming to an end of the first decade of the Millenium, flip and slide phones were the talk of the town. It was a time when the phone industries had started housing new apps from online stores. The android world gained more traction as the year was coming to an end. During those times, the phones that were considered the best had 12MP cameras, and some of them had an optical navigation key. Some devices that made the list of the best that year had HD video recordings which were a great deal back then. Some of the phones that were considered the most salutary that year were the Blackberry 8520, the Samsung Corby, the iPhone 3GS, and the Sony Ericson Satio.
During this time, Blackberry faced quite a bit of competition from the rapid rise of both Android and iPhone. The Blackberry company then released their down-sliding Blueberry Torch. In 2010 Samsung released its first Windows 7 operated Samsung Focus which made waves as not so many people expected this. Mostly considering windows was a computer OS. This system was said to be more polished and fluid than the Android and Blackberry with fewer lags and better specs. Samsung also launched its widely known Galaxy S series that has continued growing up to this day. The Google Nexus One was released at the beginning of 2010 but didn’t do so well which prompted the release of Nexus S at the end of the year. The HTC EVO 4G revolutionized the phone world by becoming the first-ever 4G operated device with a 4 -inch screen.
The phones that were made this year had big advancements in the camera, internal memory, and battery life. The Samsung Galaxy S II was the number one device that had wifi, Bluetooth as well as a memory card slot. The android version was the 2.3 known as the Gingerbread OS. The T-mobile LG G2X included an 8MP back camera and a 1.3 MP camera, an enhanced audio system, and a 1080p recording capacity. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play came with a 3G wireless radio and stereo speakers in addition to the 5MP back camera and a VGA front-facing camera.
By the beginning of 2012, the era of selfies had already started picking up. Because 2012 has its fair share of phones with front-facing camera lenses. The phones had better music systems others integrating beats audio in their systems. The iPhone had Siri who was quite a wonder, and their iPhone 4S took amazing pictures. The HTC Titan II had an impressive 16MP camera. In this era, the camera specs seemed to be the point of focus that most phone companies highly invested in. Android phones had the Icecream version of the system. The HTC Radar 4G and the windows Samsung Focus S made waves in the phone industry that year.
Apple released two phones this year; the 5c and the 5s versions. The phones made in this era varied both in sizes, weights, build, and display, to mention a few. Colors were also another differing characteristic that most manufacturers ventured into. Out of the blues, more companies produced a wider variety of different colored phones. There was also a massive advancement of the phones internal storage with the iPhone 5s and Samsung s4 topping the list with a capacity of 64GB.In the camera zone, the Samsung Galaxy, Note 3, and the Lumia took the lead. In that same year, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was the first phone to have a stylus pointer. Back then, the only phone that had the fingerprint tech was the iPhone5s.
By the end of 2014, phones that were released along the year had seen massive changes nobody had anticipated. Apple released their 6 and the 6S versions that featured slow motion, time-lapse and HDR camera recording capabilities. The waterproof Sony Xperia Z3 came along with the perfect finely finished body. The phones produced this year had features far much advanced from their previous versions. The Blackberry made a comeback with the Blackberry Passport phone. HTC one M3 windows and the Google Nexus 6 were also released in 2014.
In 2015 manufactures further experimented with making phones using different phone casings. The HTC One M9 has an aluminum case while the Oneplus x was metallic. The Samsung Galaxy 6 and the 6 edge were also made a première during this year with better camera quality and the edge having a fully covered display screen from edge to edge hence the name. On top of the game yet again was the Apple team with the iPhone 6 and the 6S versions with awesome features such as 3d touch, live photos, and an updated camera.
This was the year we were graced with the release of the Galaxy 7 and 7edge versions from Samsung. Both phones took amazing photos and videos, had a very responsive fingerprint scanner, and advanced Samsung pay support, among other amazing features. The LG V10 has beefed up a unique secondary front display, a second wide-angle front-facing camera, back fingerprint scanner, rock-solid stainless steel sides, and a composite textured detachable back cover. Other phones that made waves are the LG G4, the Blackberry Priv, and the Nextbin Robin.
In 2017 all the devices that were made responded faster, took better photos and videos, had bigger memory capacities, had impeccable designs and some could now be charged wirelessly. The wifi connectivity got better, and some still came with a stylus as part of their accessories while most could take a dip in the water without getting damaged. The top brands of 2017 are the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, the LG V30, and the Google Pixel 2.
In 2018, the long-awaited Samsung Galaxy S9 made a debut. The S9 comes packing a Snapdragon 845 mobile processor which is an upgrade from its predecessor. And if you thought they are done, it now had a more improved speaker for better, louder, and clearer sound. The Huawei P20 has dual rear cameras and plenty of processing speed. The legendary iPhone X made a debut this year.
Each year Apple never ceases to amaze us. This year we were graced by the triple rear cameras iPhone 11 Pro. Stated as one of the most expensive phones ever made. Apple is not the only brand that is making moves this year. Brands as Samsung, OnePlus 7T, and Pixel 3a made waves too. We also saw the first foldable-screen phones by Samsung and Huawei.
Huawei’s coming up with a new operating system called Harmony OS due to the sanctions placed on it by the USA. Google released a new phone, called the Pixel 4. Smartphones are now starting to include 5g capability. Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 20 which will be a 5g capable phone and have up to 16GB RAM and a 512GB storage. Phones nowadays may have multiple back-cameras, USB-C charging ports, some water-resistant or waterproofing, fingerprint scanners, and the year is not over yet. There is still so much to come.
