MySpeed (TRAI): Check Your Internet Speeds on 2G/3G/4G and/or Wi-Fi
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) MySpeed application allows users to calculate their data speed experience and optionally send the test results to TRAI.
MySpeed Android application calculates and captures the results and sends the following to TRAI:
- Data speed
- Network information
- Device information
- Location information
TRAI’s latest Android application does not send any user’s personal information. All MySpeed test results are uploaded (optionally) anonymously. While TRAI’s speed check application provides TRAI with details of user’s data experience, it does not mean that users are submitting a complaint. In the event that users are getting poor data throughput, users are to communicate their complaint(s) with their respective network service provider(s).
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) have launched their latest Android application. TRAI’s previous Android application was the DND Services (TRAI). TRAI’s latest Android application has been developed in direct competition to Speedtest’s app and website. TRAI’s latest Android application will also be competing against all other speed test applications in Google’s Play Store. Called MySpeed, users can check their respective Internet speeds on their tablets and/or smartphones.
This is independent Android application from TRAI. Users can check their speed on 2G/3G/4G and/or Wi-Fi connections. TRAI has not officially launched the Android application. The TRAI Android application is available for download from Google’s Play Store.
The Google’s Play Store is compatible with tablets and smartphones running Google’s Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS and above. TRAI’s MySpeed has been made available to users free of cost. Apple users would be receiving this application later. Currently, TRAI has not announced plans to launch their MySpeed application in Apple’s App Store.
Data collected through MySpeed is going to be directly integrated in TRAI’s analytics portal. This data will allow them to be informed of the latest internet data speeds in India.
For differentiating itself from other applications, TRAI’s MySpeed Android application receives device information, network coverage and related information, and location data.
Earlier in the year, TRAI had released their recommendation for minimum internet speeds. MySpeed is going to provide support so that facts can be substantiated. MySpeed will provide TRAI with adequate data for appropriate action.
Users in India have been witnessing poor coverage and internet speeds. Although, telecom companies are taking some steps to improve this condition, the results are not encouraging. The reality is very, very far from user expectations. Users are receiving low speeds than what had been promised. Even popular areas in cities are having poor coverage.
TRAI is now putting the pedal to the metal (read using appropriate authority) to make sure that telecom companies are not providing substandard services in the country. TRAI is hoping that with the data from its Android application, it will receive proof to take appropriate action against the telecom companies.
