Snapdeal justifies its decision on why it’s not going App Only
E-commerce is on high boom these days. People prefer buying everything online as it saves them from the hassles of actual shopping. Thus, e-commerce websites are adopting mobile as an innovative and excellent platform to expand their business quickly. They want more and more people to access their app or service for their benefit. For instance, recently Myntra took a step of going app-only. Similarly, Flipkart is yet to finalize on this decision and is soon planning to go app-only from the next month. Likewise, Olacab followed suit and made it available only on mobile app.
Of late, a local service named LocalOye is not in the favor of going app only for some own reasons. While on the other hand, Cleartrip was quite clear about the idea of making its importance felt on mobile apps. Snapdeal hired a new Chief Product Officer, Anand Chandrasekaran. This newly hired person said that he is not interested in making Snapdeal app-only. In an interview with NDTV Gadgets, said that he wants the service to be available on both the platforms. He switched from Airtel to Snapdeal this year where he worked on Wynk and Airtel Money. He said that, many changes are taking place in the company these days and thus, it has become quite essential to make the difference. With a wide range of apps coming up, its importance has reduced considerably.
Snapdeal is in no hurry to make its service app-only. It is of the view that the one-size–fits-all model is never good for such services. You cannot cover all the needs of the customers in India by making only the app available. Chandrasekaran is also of the view that about more than 70% of customers comes from mobile. Talking about Freecharge, about more than 86% of its transactions is done from mobile. In this changing phase of technology, it is quite tough to gauge the success of a service instantly.
In a recent interview, Chandrasekaran said that today India is revolving around internet and data adoption via mobiles has become very common. Snapdeal has been into business since a very long time, long before other similar e-commerce websites came into existence. It helped people to come online and shop well. This has given rise to a host of e-commerce websites planning to rule the web with their services.
Smart phones are very essential these days as they help them to get information about everything. Thus, companies are focusing on adding new features which will help the customers shop better and add value to their product. One of the features called ‘shake to get offers’ was firstly released by Snapdeal which was very handy.
Holding a smart phone in his hand, Chandrasekaran says that his piece is very smart and it can do various tasks like a computer. It can shoot, take snaps, sense location and do various other things which are simply awesome. There is much to explore in phones when new apps come in the market. It is only one of the mediums of accessing various services, not the only medium for people these days. Recently Snapdeal had a meeting in their office regarding making this service app-only. In this meeting, literally no one raised their hands in support of the decision.
The new Chief Product Officer of Snapdeal also added that you need to think about every person using your service. Only a bunch of people using it and talking about it is never a good option. Apps are more engaging and convenient for the customers. However, the web is equally alive and demands public attention. Google and Apple have done a good job in seeding all the ecosystems well.
Since the past 5-7 years, Google is investing well in Google Chrome. On this, Chandrasekaran says that chrome was just a normal platform five years ago and now it is one of the best browsing media in the world. All this has been done on the web which means that web still holds its importance. With all the mounting advantages and disadvantages, we need to look what are the users interested in. Our innovations should always be parallel to the needs of the users.
Snapdeal has been in business since many years. It has been successful in earning huge revenues being as a channel for top companies like Apple and others. Top brands always help to bring more traffic as well as fame. Talking about companies’ future vision, they are focusing more on not being homogenous and catering to various needs of the public. As per the statistics, every tens seconds, a bike is ordered from Snapdeal. This is enough to gauge the fame and success of this website as compared to others.
